Class Lecture #3

Class Lecture #3- Julia Alvarez

I enjoyed talking about Julia Alvarez “White Women of Color” because I got to see her point of view during a time of tyranny. I also have read her book “In the Time of the Butterflies” so I was interested to learn more about her as a person and author than what I already knew. It was very informing in reading about how bad the reign of Trujillo as dictator was and how he ordered a genocide of thousands of people because they didn’t fit into his idea of being a Dominican. I liked also learning about when she came to America at the time when there was segregation because I love to hear about others experiences during times that I won’t be able to experience but read and hear about. It was horrible to learn of all the discrimination and dehumanization against colored people because others felt the need to feel superior to other ethnicities and just not treat them as equals. Overall this lecture was an eye opener to the things that other have experienced in their lives and it made me realize how much we take advantage of the things we have and don’t appreciate them while others are suffering and don’t receive much.
