Class Lecture #1- Transcendentalism and Idealism
I really enjoyed this lecture, especially that we got to do
this lecture outside which is a transcendental thing to do. A transcendentalist believes beyond the
physical and is more connected to the extraordinary. They believe that man can
only thrive when connected to nature and man. I enjoyed learning the things a
transcendentalist does and now whenever I’m outside doing something with my
friends or even just sitting down on a bench and just enjoying the weather, I
question if what I’m doing I transcendental. Idealism was also a big part of
the lecture ad learning that idealist have unrealistic goals and believe in
perfection I had a problem with that. The world is not perfect and no one
person is perfect either but society tries to make things seem perfect and that
is what is wrong. Magazines photoshop bodies, there’s cosmetic surgery or even
just cross breeding puppies because that seems to be perfect is just wrong.
Society wants to be so perfect that they don’t address the flaws that are
shown, they would rather try to fix those flaws like in the short story we went
over in class “The Birthmark” in which a guy doesn’t accept his wife’s
birthmark on her face he wants her to be perfect but to him she isn’t if she
has that birthmark. There’s no such thing as perfect.
