Class Lecture #2 – "Identity" by Julio Noboa Polanco
Today’s last class lecture was interesting. I loved the poem
“Identity” by Julio Noboa Polanco that talks about how he would rather be a
ugly tall weed than a pleasant smelling flower. The flower was seen as
symbolizing the external world and that a flower is what is accepted in society
and not an ugly tall weed. The weed can symbolize a way of being different from
others. It’s a sign of rebellion. This poem is seen as an extended metaphor and
it expresses itself through each stanza perfectly. It made me think that it is
okay to be an outsider because it makes you unique in your own way and while some
people in society may not accept you, it is okay. I loved this class lecture
because it teaches you that some people may not accept you and that’s okay. The
question that has me thinking though is “What would you compare yourself to? I don’t
really know but maybe someday I will figure it out.
